Saving the Great Marsh

Summary: Presented by Russ Hopping, Lead Coastal Ecologist for the Trustees of Reservations

When: Jun 14, 2023
Time:23:00 - 00:30

Description

Storm Surge Speaker Series Event

Historical agricultural practices dating back to the colonial era have compromised the health of the Great Marsh, leaving it vulnerable to flooding.  The goal of the Salt Marsh Restoration project is to restore and strengthen the marsh to continue to serve as a natural habitat and barrier against climate change.

Without the intervention of this work, sea level rise will eventually cause loss of marsh and conversion to open water, which would have severe local and regional impacts on biodiversity and climate resiliency.

Russ Hopping, the Lead Coastal Ecologist for the Trustees of Reservations, has more than 20 years of experience restoring and managing natural habitats and resources.  Russ will share details on innovative nature-based methods used in the Salt Marsh Restoration project to rebuild and heal the marsh.
